It comes as a surprise to many people that the Dolman Theatre is owned by Newport Playgoers Society and it’s run by volunteers and that N.P.S productions are created by people who are not paid, but who have a passion for theatre and are dedicated to producing work to the very highest standard. Apart from an interest in theatre, people join for different reasons: for social contact, to gain experience of “real theatre” before going to drama school, to use their technical expertise, or simply to find out how theatre works. They are vital members of the Dolman Team, and the time and commitment that they continually give to the theatre is much appreciated.

Approximately 100 volunteers currently work to keep our theatre alive. All new volunteers will be given an induction to the theatre and assessed as to which department their talents and skills suit, then they will be appointed a Dolman Buddy; the buddy’s role is to ensure that each newcomer is made to feel welcome and integrated into the theatre family. Each active member will be given a short training course and integrated into the most suitable department. The training course includes fire safety, customer service, theatre policy and health and safety. We hold volunteer training sessions throughout the year to enhance skills and, most importantly, to socialise. The current team are aged between 16 and 70 years plus, and include students, professionals and retired people, so you have every opportunity to make new friends.
